What is your favorite book or author and why? East of Eden, for the clean and simple language that nevertheless conveys the beauty and ugliness of humans, for Steinbeck’s uncanny ability to undersatnd of human emotions and his way of crafting characters that become real people outside of the context of their stories.

Describe (in a short paragraph) a significant breakthrough in your development as a writer: I’ve learned the value of lean writing. My older works of writing used language that I thought sounded beautiful but in reality carried very little substance. Paring down the use of flowery language gives more nuance and impact to writing and I’ve found that it allows for the emotion of the piece to come through more clearly.
