Your name: Micheal Keen
Your home town:Bethesda, MD
Your major(s): Middle East and South Asian Studies and Arabic
Are you fluent in any language(s) other than English?
What are your career plans?
I’m not really sure! I’d plan to work with or in the Middle East, but I don’t know in exactly what context.
What is your favorite book or author and why?
And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini. Hosseini does a wonderful job of crafting the story and weaving its different strands together, but his prose itself is also beautiful. Every page of the book is masterfully written, and the story as a whole still manages to be more than the sum of the writing involved.
What is your favorite word?
Mellifluous. I like the way it rolls off the tongue.
Describe (in a short paragraph) a significant breakthrough in your development as a writer: I wrote a daily blog from September 2012 to June 2015. Writing for a deadline every single day really helped me learn to clarify my thoughts and streamline my writing process, and, because I wrote about a lot of different things, it exposed me to different kinds of writing.
